Acerola (Malphigia glabra Linnè) is the fruit of Acerola bush, a native plant of West Indies, original from Antilhas. It has been popularly known as Barbados cherry, and stands out among other fruits for its high Vitamin C content, from which it is one of the richest known sources in the world. The fruit is edible and widely consumed in the species native area, and is cultivated elsewhere for its high vitamin C content. There are 1677.6 mg of vitamin C in 100g of fruit.
CONSTITUENTS: Acerola brings several health benefits, not only by being one of the richest known natural sources of vitamin C but also by the content of other nutrients, including carotenoids and anthocyanins compounds, which impart antioxidant and immune system stimulation properties. Besides Vitamin C, Acerola cherry contains high levels of Vitamin A, folate and minerals: potassium regulates blood pressure and heart function, potassium can even elevate mood. Calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium it serve to maintain proper metabolism in the body. The copper content in the fruit facilitates the absorption of iron by the body. The Vitamin C and beta-carotene also fights against acne and improves eyesight. The acerola extract shows antioxidant activity, and therefore it may be useful in chronic diseases, such as some cancers and cardiovascular disease, characterized by oxidative damage to biological molecules.
