Green Coffee Extract has a number of health benefits related to weight management: reduction in fat adsorption, inhibition of fat accumulation, fat metabolism, prevention against Type II Diabetes Mellitus and antioxidant activity.
CONSTITUENTS: The chemical constituents of the raw green coffee beans contribute to its health benefits. Green coffee contains caffeine and polyphenols. The caffeine content found in coffee beans is 1% – 2%. Caffeine is commonly known for its stimulant and diuretic effects. Green coffee contains an abundance of antioxidants. The major polyphenols found in green coffee beans are chlorogenic acid and its isomers. Chlorogenic acids are a family of esters formed between quinic acid and phenolic compounds known as cinnamic acids. The most abundant chlorogenic acid in coffee is 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid, an ester formed between quinic acid and caffeic acid. Green coffee beans can contain as much as 10% chlorogenic acids, and are one of the richest sources of chlorogenic acids in the diet.
LATIN NAME: Coffea arabica
USED PARTS: Beans
DRYING METHOD: Spray Drying
CARRIER: Maltodextrin (soluble) or Tapioca (starch) (insoluble)
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: caffeine, theobromine, theophylline, tannins and flavonoids (antioxidants) and chlorogenic acid, where the 5-caffeine-quinic acid is highlighted.
PROPERTIES: Chlorogenic acid is a phytochemical found in coffee and coffee beans. It has been touted as being able to reduce blood sugar levels and potentially exert an anti-diabetic effect. It has also been implicated in weight loss and exerting an anti-obesity effect, but that is insofar correlation and not necessarily due to chlorogenic acid. It can be beneficial to supplement, although doses found in food sources are enough for a long-term preventative (anti-diabetic) measure. Green Coffee Extract promotes the loss of visceral fat. This is fat in the tissues lining the abdominal cavity and surrounding the internal organs. It is typically associated with the “apple” body shape. Visceral fat can lead to an increased risk of metabolic syndrome and Type-2 diabetes. Chlorogenic acid and caffeine found in Green Coffee Extract promote fat loss by blocking gastric and pancreatic lipase. Lipases are enzymes that break down triglycerides so they can be stored in the body’s fat cells. Green Coffee Extract was shown to suppress body weight gain better than chlorogenic acid or caffeine alone, suggesting a synergistic effect between chlorogenic acid isomers and caffeine. Green Coffee Extract also suppressed visceral fat accumulation.
PREPARATION: Studies using Green Coffee Extract (GCE) tend to be dosed based on their chlorogenic acid content, which in isolation are taken in the 120-300mg range. Based on this, recommended intakes of GCE would be approximately:
- 1,200-3,000mg for a 10% chlorogenic acid supplement
- 600-1,500mg for a 20% chlorogenic acid supplement
- 240-600mg for a 50% chlorogenic acid supplement
APPLICATIONS: Nutraceuticals, dietary supplements, phytoterapics, food supplements, food supplements, functional foods, medical food, energy foods, energy drinks, pharmaceuticals uses.
PRECAUTIONS: Not to be used during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Coffee contains caffeine and should not be used by those who are sensitive or allergic to caffeine or xanthines. Excessive consumption of caffeine is contraindicated for persons with high blood pressure, cardiac disorders, diabetes, ulcers, epilepsy, and other disorders. There are interactions between coffee and some drugs, such as:
- antidepressants (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) and tyramine, present in coffee, which can lead to bouts of hypertension;
- between theophylline (used as a bronchodilator and bronchial asthma) and theophylline resulting from the metabolization of coffee by cytochrome P450, leading to a high plasma concentration of this compound, which can lead to toxicity, insomnia and cardiac arrhythmias.
