Espinheira Santa Leaves

  • Brand: Brazilian Forest
  • Product Code: Plantas Medicinais
  • Availability: In Stock

Espinheira Santa (Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. Ex Reiss.) is a plant species widely used in folk medicine due to its antiulcerogenic, antitumor and antimicrobial activities. Native of southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina, it is widely used for the preparation of infusion or phytotherapeutic teas for the treatment of gastric conditions such as hyperacidity, gastric, duodenal ulcers and chronic gastritis. Its leaves present triterpenes and polyphenolic substances (flavonoids and tannins) related to the antiulcerogenic effect.

CONSTITUENTS: The chemical composition of leaves of M.ilicifolia is constituted by triterpenes, flavonoids and tannins. Among the polyphenolic compounds, the quercetin and kaempferol derivatives predominate. Subsequent chemical profile evaluations corroborated the presence of these substances, which in turn are involved in the biological activities reported to date, such as antiulcer, antimicrobial, analgesic and antiinflammatory activity, antioxidant and diuretic activity. The pharmacological action of M. ilicifolia under peptic ulcer and gastritis involves more than one mechanism of action, and is not due only to a specific active principle, but to the different substances present in its extract. It has been demonstrated that both tannins, especially epigallocatechin, and essential oils, especially fridenelol, are responsible for part of the gastroprotective effects.
