CONSTITUENTS: Jatoba bark contains high amounts of mineral substances, such as manganese, silicon and strontium, which are essential for almost all biochemical processes in our body. Studies have shown that H. courbaril presents compounds such as flavonoids and diterpenoids in their resins, leaves, bark of the trunk, fruit pulps and seeds. The phytochemical analysis of H. courbaril revealed the presence of alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoids, steroids/triterpenoids and tannins in ethanol crude extract from the barks.

USED PARTS: Bark

DRYING METHOD: Sun dried

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, coumarins, steroids/triterpenoids and tannins.

PROPERTIES: Scientific studies on the medicinal properties of H. courbaril revealed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and dengue virus type-2. The secondary metabolites of this plant showed the presence of fisetin as the major compound, probably responsible for the antimicrobial properties. Fisetin is a natural flavonoid of interest in cancer prevention and therapy because this compound is relatively non toxic compared to other chemotherapeutic agents used in cancer therapy. Fisetin possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and was found to be cytotoxic and antiangiogenic in vitro. After systemic administration in mice, fisetin has shown interesting antitumor activity in several cancer models, including prostate, teratocarcinoma and lung carcinoma.
